Plant description:   A small evergreen hebacious plant going upto 1 meter. Roots are of commercial interest
Distribution in India:
Naturally occurs in northern mid India.
Life cycle: - 4-6 months

 

Climatic requirements:  Sub tropical to tropical. It prefers dry weather for its successful growth.

Soil:  sandy loam or light red soil with good amount of organic matter and drainage. Soil pH range should be 7.5-8.

Rainfall:   660-750 mm

Temperature:  5-50 0 c

Varieties:  Jawahar ashgandh 20

Land Preparation: Commences in the month of May-June (pre monsoon). Two to three times Ploughing is done to attain the desired level of tilth. Land is left for one month to be followed by one more Ploughing.

Manuring:  5to 6 tons per acre of FYM or cow dung manure is added after second Ploughing uniformly.

Planting material:- seeds

Sowing method: broadcasting or transplantation from nursery beds.

      Direct sowing: In rainfed areas, after receiving one or two showers the  seeds are sown in mid July.

Seed requirement per acre : 10-12 kgs

Bed dimension: 10 x 1 m bed per acre

Bed soil composition: Soil: cowdung :: 3:1

Sowing time : June

Seed material requirement per acre : 5 kgs

Sowing method: in lines spaced at 5cms apart

Germination time: starts after 6-7 days of sowing and is completed  by 10-12 days.

Transplantation:  6 week  seedlings are taransplanted in the field.

      Planting distance:  60cms plant to plant and 60 cms row to row spacing.

Irrigation: -

Fertilizer: -  grows on residual fertility.
