Botanical Identification : Coleus forskohlii
 

Herbaceous plant with annual stem and perenniel rootstock.

The root material may be tuberous, semi-tuberous or fibrous

depending upon the growth conditions.


 

 

A member of the mint family, coleus roots are as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine in tha common name of Pashanbhedi in South India. Central Drug Research Institute of India extensively screened this plant to isolate forskolin. Forskolin reduces blood pressure, is useful in respiratory disorders, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, fat loss and immunomodulation.

 

Market Status

Coleus has a very good market demand both in domestic and abroad market. Its extract standardized with forskolin is in high demand in US market.

 

Cultivation Practices

Climatic requirements: subtropical and warm temperate up to 600-1800 m above MSL (mean sea level) on sun-exposed hill slopes and plateaus in arid and semiarid climatic zones

Soil requirements: loamy or sandy-loam soil with a pH of 6.4 to 7.9.


Phytochemistry:

Forskolin is the chief chemical ingredient in it.
